Paul Merson predicts how many goals Newcastle United will score against Sheffield United today

Sheffield United travel up to Newcastle today for another tough away day and Paul Merson has predicted the result.

St James’ Park will be a tough place for United to go following their 4-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in midweek.

Further, the Blades go to Newcastle knowing that Eddie Howe’s men stuck eight goals past them the last time out, something which simply cannot happen again.

Chris Wilder will be keen to address the defensive issue hindering his team. The Blades have now conceded a record 92 goals this season and a repeat of the result against the Toon last time will take things to the 100 mark.

Quite whether United, who are injury hit again, can keep Newcastle out, remains to be seen.

And predicting the result of the game for SportsKeeda, Paul Merson has said he doesn’t hold out much hope for the depleted Blades.

Writing up his prediction for the game, Merson admitted he simply cannot see past another heavy defeat for the Blades.

“Sheffield United have conceded four goals in each of their past two games and got well beaten by Manchester United despite putting up a fight. Newcastle were on the wrong end of a beating by Palace the other day, but they are a good team at home and should get all three points against the basement dwellers…4-0,” Merson said.

Anything less than four is a plus

That sounds super negative but you simply cannot look beyond the facts here.

Sheffield United have been woeful defensively this season and are shipping goals with mistakes in nearly every single game.

Couple that with the mental situation around conceding eight against this outfit last time, and the United players will do well to keep the score down to something respectable.

Of course, we know the Blades can produce a bit in terms of going forward and can score goals when they’re on it.

But today just feels a massive stretch and anything less than a 4-0 defeat will, in a strange way, feel like a bit of a relief.
