Journalist says Man City are still in the race to sign ‘special’ 20-year-old star in 2025

Journalist Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Manchester City are interested in signing one of the Bundesliga’s star players.

Last summer, the Manchester club spent a significant amount of money to bring two young players to the Etihad Stadium from abroad in the shape of Jeremy Doku and Josko Gvardiol.

Even though the upcoming summer transfer window hasn’t opened yet, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding another young player currently making a name for himself in one of Europe’s top leagues that has been linked with a move to City.

In a recent post shared on his official X account, Plettenberg had this to say on the matter.

He said: “Florian Wirtz, top target for FC Bayern in 2025 as he will stay in Leverkusen for one more season!

“Uli Hoeneß has spoken about Wirtz, told @faznet: ‘We can spend 100 million euros once for a Harry Kane, maybe once more for a German player, but not four or five times.’“

“Bayern bosses with Hoeneß included, they all want him. All big clubs are still in (Real Madrid, Man City, Liverpool …)

“But: If Bayern can really afford the transfer fee, they have good chances to sign him next year as the 20 y/o and his family see Bayern as an intermediate step before a move abroad, which he plans for later.”

Florian Wirtz is a ‘special’ player

Back in September, it was reported that City are eager to sign the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder this summer.

However, it has since been said by the German club’s CEO that they haven’t even put a price tag on Wirtz to show that he is not for sale this summer.

This season has seen the midfielder, who Xabi Alonso has described as a “special” player, score 17 goals and deliver 19 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

Having played such a key role in Leverkusen’s title-winning campaign, it’s easy to see why so many top clubs have their eyes on him.

Even though Plettenberg has now said that Bayern Munich have a good chance to sign the 20-year-old in 2025, we feel that City should still do all they can to land a deal for him next year.

Also, the fact that he apparently plans to play abroad later on his career is very interesting and could benefit the Citizens if they still have an interest in him.
