Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have a player just like Thiago after watching him vs West Ham

Liverpool could only limp to a draw against West Ham United on Saturday when they really needed three points.

The Reds needed a reaction having gone down so poorly against Everton on Wednesday. But, yet again, we didn’t get one.

As they’ve done far too often this season, Liverpool went into half-time behind. Cody Gakpo was one of the players to blame for allowing Jarrod Bowen to head home just before the break.

Jurgen Klopp’s side did bounce back, with Andy Robertson at the heart of things. But it wasn’t enough to get the win.

Despite that, there were one or two good displays. Robertson was probably the standout, but the Liverpool midfield worked relatively well, too. And taking to X after the game, Jamie Carragher assessed the display of one of the Reds midfield three.

Jamie Carragher makes Alexis Mac Allister point

Liverpool’s midfield has been up and down this season. It’s undoubtedly been better than last year, but that wasn’t a particularly high bar.

Of late though, things have started to go awry. Wataru Endo has looked leggy while Dominik Szoboszlai has completely fallen off a cliff.

In between that, Alexis Mac Allister has surely been the best of the Liverpool midfielders all season long.

That continued at the London Stadium on Saturday, with Mac Allister pulling the strings adeptly.

However, it wasn’t all perfect from the 25-year-old, who picked up his near customary booking. And that, according to Carragher, is what is perhaps stopping him from being a top-class midfielder.

“McCallister is very similar to Thiago, quality on the ball but just can’t help giving free kicks away!” says the Liverpool legend.

Mac Allister draws Thiago comparison

It’s really a shame that we haven’t had chance to see Mac Allister alongside Thiago at all this season.

The two players are similarly classy and do have a lot of attributes in common.

They could perhaps be too similar to have played together, but it would have been fun to have seen them try.

Instead, Thiago will depart this summer once his contract runs out. Mac Allister will continue, of course, and will hopefully work on his propensity for giving away free-kicks.
