The planned legislative changes adopted by the Georgian government demonstrate that the country is not moving closer to European ideas, but away from them, says President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda.
"Unfortunately, the events and planned legislative changes clearly demonstrate that our close country, Georgia, is not getting closer, but, on the contrary, moving away from European ideas," Nauseda said.
He emphasized that such actions of the government create obstacles to the smooth continuation of the European integration path.
"We must respond to this," the Lithuanian president said.
Legislative changes in Georgia
On April 18 this year, the Georgian parliament passed a draft law on foreign agents in the first reading. The second reading is expected to take place on April 30.
This is the second attempt by the ruling party of Georgia to pass such a law. At that time, large-scale protests against the bill began in Tbilisi.
During the protests, there were even clashes with the police, who used tear gas and water cannons.
This time, protests have resumed in Tbilisi. Residents of the country oppose the scandalous law.
The European Parliament reacted to this bill. The EP adopted a resolution in response to the actions of the Georgian government.
