LA grocery store is selling eight ice cubes for $30, and people just don't get it

A grocery store in Los Angeles is the talk of the internet after someone spotted a bag of ice that costs more than $30.

Erewhon is an American upscale supermarket chain with ten locations, all in Los Angeles County, that is known for its high price tags.

Erewhon is selling ice for $30

“Tell me why they’re selling… this is ice by the way… for $31.99,” the woman said in horror in a viral TikTok video. “This is eight ice cubes.”

While speaking, she zoomed in on the bag, which is full of huge ice balls that are perfectly sphere in shape and spectacularly clear.

In the comments, people are gobsmacked, with one person writing: “Where’s the water from? Narnia?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me. I would love to see the person who buys that,” said another.

A third person added: “My fridge makes those for free.”

“30 dollars for frozen water?” someone else commented.

The LA grocery store chain is known for its extortionate prices, including Hailey Bieber’s Strawberry “Skin Glaze” smoothie which costs a staggering $19.

It’s a collaboration with the model which includes creamy almond milk, organic strawberries and avocado, enhanced with collagen and sea moss for added benefits.

The luxury ice cubes melt slower

However, others are defending the crazy expensive ice, with another commenting: “That’s Penny Pound ice. That stuff’s luxurious.”

The luxury ice is made by a Southern Californian company called Penny Pound, who make ultra-clear ice that melts far slower than the normal kind.

“Crafted by Penny Pound Ice, these Ice Ballz are more than just frozen water,” the Erewhon website says. “They’re an elegant solution to keeping your beverages chilled without diluting the flavor.”

“Perfectly spherical, they melt slower than traditional ice cubes, ensuring your drink stays colder for longer. Ideal for cocktails, iced coffees, and more.”

They use Clinebell ice machines that were designed for ice sculptors to create ice that makes a better drink, has a slower dilution rate, gives you a colder drink and is “really sexy to look at”.

On the Penny Pound website, the same bag of Ice Ballz costs $28, so Erewhon didn’t actually inflate the price very much at all.

“The ice you get at fancy restaurants that is crystal clear actually takes a lot more work to make,” someone argued.

Another wrote: “As food prop stylists and assistants, we buy this ice often for photoshoots.”

“This type of ice is produced so it doesn’t melt fast and water down expensive drinks or a really good cocktail,” someone else explained.
