Five things we learned as Manchester United draw 1-1 with Burnley, Antony saves Ten Hag

Manchester United took on Burnely at Old Trafford on Saturday, here’s five things we’ve learned from the game.

After Wednesday’s hard-fought win over Sheffield United, Manchester United returned to being absolutely awful against Burnley.

A tough watch at Old Trafford saw United outperformed by 19th place Burnley in front of an expectant home stadium.

Antony opened the scoring for United in the 80th minute with what looked to be the winner.

But Burnley equalised from the spot to leave it a 1-1 draw.

Here are five things we learned from the game…

Antony scores first Premier League goal in over a year

United were awful for practically the entire game, with the attacking players blundering countless early chances.

But in the 80th minute, it was probably the unlikeliest of heroes who put United ahead, Antony was the scorer for the the first time in the league for over a year.

It was almost reminiscent of Amad’s goal against Liverpool in the cup.

Fair play to Antony who has proven Erik ten Hag‘s decision to start him correct thanks to that goal he’s scored.

Andre Onana once again is superb and the only shining light

This season, Andre Onana has been absolutely incredible and it’s time he got his flowers. Without the Cameroonian, we dread to think where United would be.

Against Burnley again Onana was extremely busy in goal and prevented some huge chances that the Clarets had.

Onana must be at his wits end with this side which leaves him under pressure so often but on the plus side, he’s definitely proven himself after a worrying start.

He may have given away a silly penalty, but without him, it would’ve been far worse.

Ten Hag’s in-game management is poor

At 0-0, United were struggling and needed to make a change. So there was delight when both Scott McTominay and Amad Diallo were seen preparing to enter the pitch.

This was until the board signalled that it was Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund who’d be coming off instead of Antony and Christian Eriksen.

This led to boos and left United playing long-ball football with three small, non-physical wingers interchanging up front.

Awful game management, despite Antony scoring, having no striker left United with basically no plan.

Points dropped once again

Despite how awful United was for the whole game, it looked like they’d actually sneak out of this game with three points.

But a clumsy moment from Onana gave Burnley a penalty as he took out Zeki Amdouni while attempting to make a high claim.

There’s something fundamentally wrong with this squad that they seem incapable of holding onto a lead.

It’s very concerning and isn’t a good look at all for Ten Hag as Ineos reviews his performances closely.

Things are looking bleak for Ten Hag’s future at United

It’s been said that the run-in was crucial for Ten Hag if he was to be able to convince the new regime to keep him on as manager.

If that is the case, Jason Wilcox will not be impressed by what he’s witnessed over recent games.

United were terrible against Burnley and played a footballing style that Ineos wouldn’t have wanted to see, considering the desire for possession football.

As of right now, we struggle to see Ten Hag retaining his place after this season.
