Leicester City will continue bizarre Championship streak if they win the title this season

Leicester City sealed their return to the Premier League on Friday night.

It comes after Leeds United, who sit in 2nd at the time of writing, lost 4-0 away at QPR on Friday night.

Leicester City remain in 1st whilst Ipswich Town go up against Hull City on Saturday night, with the Foxes not in action until the Monday.

Enzo Maresca and his newly-promoted players head to Deepdale for their second-to-last Championship game of the season.

And depending on how Ipswich Town fare at Hull City, the Foxes could win the Championship title on Monday.

Hypothetically speaking, if Ipswich Town win at Hull City, then Leicester City will need to wait until the final day of the season until they have a chance of lifting the Championship title.

Ipswich still have three games left to play (including Hull City), and after their trip to the Humber, they’ll still have one game left in hand on Leeds.

And if Ipswich Town draw or lose against Leicester City, the Foxes can then be crowned Championship winners if they beat Preston on Monday night.

If Leicester City win the Championship title on Monday, or indeed any other day between now and the end of the season, then they’ll set a strange record.

It’s come to light on X that the last three teams to win the Championship title were all the opponents for Huddersfield Town’s first home game of that same season.

And the Foxes were Huddersfield Town’s first opponents at the John Smith’s Stadium this season, meaning if they win the title this season then they will become the fourth team in four seasons to win the title after being Huddersfield’s first home opponents.

What Enzo Maresca will be thinking ahead of Preston clash

Maresca won’t have anything in mind other than a win on Monday night.

Although promotion is in the bag, it’s not been an easy ride for the Foxes.

In fact, after being so dominant for so much of the season, they may well disappointed with how late they’ve had to leave promotion this season.

So the least that Maresca will feel he can do is now deliver the Championship crown to the Leicester City fans.

Preston are out of the top six race, but they won’t want to watch another team be officially crowned champions on their home turf.

They’ll be right up for the challenge and so Leicester need to put in arguably their biggest performance of the season to bring home the title.

Kick off is at 8pm on Monday.
