‘Remember when they said that’: Alan Shearer vents frustration at Aston Villa-Chelsea controversy

Well, that was eventful for Aston Villa after their 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

Let’s be honest here, whilst Unai Emery and the players have been outstanding all season long, that was probably the worst performance of the season.

Even though Aston Villa went into the break 2-0 up, the performance just wasn’t there, and somehow, they came out in the second half much worse!

There can be no arguments that Chelsea deserved their comeback, with Douglas Luiz gifting Noni Madueke his goal after poor decision-making from a free-kick, before that Conor Gallagher stunner to level the scores to the anger of the Villa Park crowd.

It was one-way traffic and the Aston Villa players had no response. You will never know why the team was dropping so deep and making life so difficult for themselves!

Despite all of that, you felt that the Champions League-chasing side would walk away with a draw, before controversy struck in stoppage-time.

Axel Disasi, who had just come onto the pitch, thought he had scored the winning goal and this was a dramatic comeback from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

But VAR intervened and judged that, in the build-up, Diego Carlos, who was also a substitute, was fouled by Benito Badiashile.

The Villa players protested straight away and got what they wanted, with the opposition bench rightfully annoyed and angry.

But they weren’t the only ones, with Alan Shearer also expressing his thoughts and being critical of those at the top who set these bars, as he told Match of the Day.

Axel Disasi disallowed goal

“You know when they say when they give the foul ‘there is not enough to overturn it’,” said Shearer. “Well, it’s the opposite this one.

“I think the defender (Carlos) knows what he is doing here. He sticks his arm out, then he sort of backing into him. Once the referee gives that I am not 100% certain. Is that an absolute howler? (The response is no by Gary Lineker). Well, there is your answer then.

“We aren’t going to re-referee the games. It’s only for absolute howlers. Remember when they said that?!”

Aston Villa have to move on

This was a game to forget. Yes, it’s dropped points. Not just because of where Chelsea are in the table, but the fact that we were 2-0 up and ended up recording a 2-2 draw.

Move on quickly, rather than dwelling on this because this was nowhere near good enough and you know a strong performance is around the corner.

Villa have a semi-final to think about now and trying to reach their first major European final since 1982.

The gap between ourselves and Tottenham is seven points. They have three games in hand, but it’s against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

This race for the top four is far from over, it’s just probably going to go to the final week of the season now.
