St Mirren star reveals Gers weakness they "want to target"

James Tavernier will be up for personal recognition after his efforts this season but the Rangers captain has still faced criticism from some quarters.

No Old Firm wins and a recent slump in performances and results has seen Philippe Clement’s main man come under scrutiny.

There are no doubts about his contribution in terms of goals and assists, however, James Tavernier could be in for a difficult afternoon as Rangers face St Mirren, according to one of the home side’s players.

James Tavernier set to be targetted by St Mirren

If Tavernier was a good defender, he wouldn’t be in the Rangers squad, he’d be in the Premier League.

To say that he is a bad defender or can’t defend is unfair though.

He makes mistakes, but so did Gary Stevens and Sergio Porrini, two of our most decorated right-backs.

Speaking to The Sun ahead of today’s clash, St Mirren’s Scott Tanser has some words of warning for Tavernier:

“He’s a top player. His goals and assists can’t go unnoticed.

“He’s obviously a big threat but he’s maybe also in a position we want to target. We’ve played them before and it’s me and Greg Kiltie down that side.

“We’ve worked really well together this season so we’ll be hoping to carry on and come out with the three points.”

Clement has already had warning of St Mirren game plan

Motherwell, Ross County and Dundee all did the same thing.

It’s not rocket science or a tactical plan that requires the genius of Pep Guardiola.

Teams, if they are doing it right, will always counterattack into where the opposition has left space.

With Clement wanting his full-backs to either provide width or support the midfield, the space is frequently out wide in the positions that they have vacated.

Clement broke down this issue against Ross County and Dundee, stating that our shape out of position wasn’t good enough.

It was a weakness that had come from nowhere after previously being a key strength.

Against Hearts, it was much better.

Mohamed Diomande was back and sweeping up alongside John Lundstram and there was an improved structure when Rangers lost possession.

It’s not a secret where Rangers can be got at but it was nice of Tansey to tell Clement what St Mirren’s game plan is.
