'Gutted': Celtic loanee's emotional farewell amid Parkhead return

Celtic currently have a number of players out on loan at the moment as fringe and developing stars look to get first-team football.

With 15 players all temporarily plying their trade elsewhere, they are all set to return to the club this summer when Brendan Rodgers will make a decision on whether or not they have a future at Celtic or not.

It’s clear the likes of Alexandro Bernabei and Sead Haksabanovic don’t have a long-term future at the club whilst others like Ben Summers, Marco Tilio and Tobi Oluwayemi possibly do.

But it’s the return of Bosun Lawal that will probably have the Celtic supporters excited.

Lawal ‘gutted’ at how loan spell ended

The gifted Celtic defender/midfielder enjoyed a great run in the Fleetwood Town first team whilst out on loan.

Used a versatile player for the majority of his time on loan, the Republic of Ireland u21 international made a staggering 47 appearances scoring 6 goals and creating two.

Lawal played 19 games as a centre-back, 14 in central midfield, seven as a defensive midfielder with the remaining five as either a right or left back as Fleetwood boss, Charlie Adam, utilised the 20-year-old’s versatility. [Transfermarkt]

But now that Fleetwood has been relegated, Lawal returns to Celtic ‘gutted’ but excited to come back and compete for a place in the Hoops’ first-team.

Taking to social media channel X, Lawal posted a farewell message to his loan club thanking them for his time at the club.

Lawal said, “Thank you Fleetwood for making my time at this club special.

“Gutted things didn’t go as planned but no doubt this club will be back where it belongs.

“Thank you to my teammates, coaches, all the staff and special mention our amazing fans. #OnwardTogether.

“Thank you.”

Lawal has only ever made one first-team appearance for Celtic so far. He got three minutes in the 5-0 demolition of Morton in the Scottish Cup last season under Ange Postecoglou but did make the matchday squad on three other occasions.

No doubt the youngster returns to Celtic a far better player for his experiences in England’s third-tier and he could offer Rodgers another option heading into next season as the Celtic manager ponders his defensive issues.

Rodgers requires an able deputy to step in beside Cameron Carter-Vickers and whilst it’s probably too soon to see Lawal in that category just yet, there is no doubt that with development, there is a player in there that could flourish into a perfect partner for the US defender.
