‘If that wasn’t’...Diego Carlos has his say on decisive moment during Aston Villa draw v Chelsea

Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos has shared his opinion on one key moment during Villa’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Saturday night.

It was a dramatic night at Villa Park on Saturday as Aston Villa secured a point against Chelsea in the Premier League.

The Villans will be both disappointed and relieved with the result, dropping points after being 2-0 up but being spared defeat thanks to the intervention of VAR.

After just four minutes, Marc Cucurella scored an own goal to give Villa a slim advantage before Morgan Rogers doubled the host’s lead moments prior to the interval.

The second half saw Chelsea eager to overturn Villa’s two-goal lead which they did thanks to goals from Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher, two instances that saw Unai Emery’s side way below the defensive standard required to have won the game.

Things almost went from bad to disastrous for Villa as Axel Disasi scored from a corner in injury time before VAR ruled the goal out due to a foul in the build-up, something that has since been discussed heavily on social media.

Diego Carlos shares opinion on late VAR decision during Aston Villa 2-2 Chelsea

In the dying embers of the game, it looked as though the Blues had completed a second-half comeback as Disasi scored what he thought was the match-winner.

VAR was called into action as a foul was spotted in the build-up, seeing Benoit Badiashile nudge Diego Carlos slightly off-balance before the goal was scored, sending Craig Pawson to the monitor to review the on-field decision.

The referee ruled the goal out due to the foul, seeing Villa Park erupt and Chelsea’s dug-out furious, with plenty having something to say on the matter.

Carlos himself has this morning shared his verdict on the outcome, taking to Instagram to leave a comment on BBC Football’s post about the decision.

The Brazilian commented in response to Match of the Day asking if it was the right decision to say, ‘If that wasn’t a foul, then I don’t know what was!’

The VAR call will please from a Villa perspective and anger from a Chelsea perspective, with the bottom line being that a foul was spotted to make enough impact to see the goal disallowed.

Aston Villa must move on from draw with Chelsea

Villa escaped a loss however, Emery’s side cannot escape the fact that it was a below-par performance from the hosts, who dropped two points from a winning position at a crucial part of the season.

The Villans will certainly want to put on a better display for their fans on Thursday night in the Europa Conference League semi-final against Olympiacos, with a trip to Brighton next up for the Midlands club in the Premier League.
