‘Without a doubt’: Tim Sherwood says Arsenal ‘targeted’ one Tottenham player today

After a two-week break, Tottenham Hotspur fans returned to the same old problems following their defeat to Arsenal.

Many were expecting Ange Postecoglou’s side to have some sort of say in the Premier League title race and dent Arsenal’s chances of becoming champions.

But by the half-time break came about, they were losing the north London derby 3-0, with a brilliant goal from Bukayo Saka and two goals conceded from corners.

Tottenham fans won’t be surprised that they shot themselves in the foot in that regard because it has been a major issue this season.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg put the ball into the back of his own net for the opener, before Kai Havertz was left unmarked for Arsenal’s third.

The man in between Spurs’ sticks – Guglielmo Vicario – was rooted to the spot and left motionless as their bitter rivals caused havoc.

Tim Sherwood made it clear that Vicario was ‘targeted’ by Mikel Arteta’s side, as he told Premier League Productions (28/04/24 at 3:05 pm).

This isn’t anything new because the Italian keeper, who joined in the summer, has been in this situation before.

And now it has proven to be very costly because Spurs fans have watched their team lose the biggest game of their season.

“Vicario is being targeted without a doubt,” said Sherwood.

“All Ben White does [during third goal] is pop inside of him. They’re all looking over the shoulders to see who they should mark, forget that, Vicario needs to be stronger on both goals. It’s very clever from Arsenal. They’re well drilled.”

Another London derby for Tottenham…

It’s Chelsea up next for Spurs and a reunion with their former manager – Mauricio Pochettino.

Those at Stamford Bridge have had their issues this season and, after their 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on Saturday, they are sitting ninth in the table.

But you know both teams will go at each other’s throats next Thursday. You just don’t want to be in Postecoglou’s shoes and lose both matches in the London derby.

And it doesn’t exactly get any easier because it’s a small matter of playing at Anfield after that, with Spurs still chasing Villa for Champions League football.
