'I think': Jason McAteer explains why Michael Edwards wants to appoint Arne Slot at Liverpool

Jason McAteer has shared his thoughts on why he thinks Michael Edwards wants to appoint Arne Slot at Liverpool.

Arne Slot’s name has emerged out of nowhere to become the frontrunner for the Liverpool. Before last week, few will have genuinely considered him as a contender for the job.

Even though the data has always backed him. That will be one of the reasons why Liverpool have always had him on their radar.

There is no way of telling who Michael Edwards’ preferred choice was in the managerial hunt, but there is no question about it that it’s Slot who looks to have won the race.

The 45-year-old is edging closer and closer to being appointed as Liverpool’s next manager, and the successor to Jurgen Klopp’s throne at Anfield.

Jason McAteer on why Michael Edwards wants Arne Slot

Among, the most interesting aspects of Slot’s appointment is the fact that his title will be head coach rather than manager. This is a change from Jurgen Klopp, whose title was ‘manager.’

It’s a hint towards the shifting hierarchy at Anfield, and according to McAteer that might have been a factor in why Edwards appointed Slot.

Speaking on beIN SPORTS, McAteer agreed with Richard Keys’ point about Michael Edwards’ return meaning he wanted a coach rather than a manager, which may have previously been an issue when working with Jurgen Klopp.

“It’s a really good point you [Richard Keys] made about the manager and Michael Edwards. I think there’s a lot in what you’re saying. He uses data Arne Slot. He uses all the tools that Michael Edwards will bring.

“And I agree with you [Keys]. Not that it’s come out that he fell out with Jurgen Klopp but he left the football club and then all of a sudden Jurgen announce he is leaving and then Michael Edwards comes back.”

Is Jason McAteer right about Arne Slot?

It’s difficult to tell what really went on between Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp. But it does appear there may have been some friction between the pair of them behind the scenes.

With Arne Slot’s appointment, hopefully that will change. It seems like Slot is open to taking a step back when it comes to recruitment and just focusing on the coaching side of things.

If that’s how Edwards wants to work, it makes sense, and he should be trusted to do so. After all, the former Liverpool sporting director has a phenomenal record when it comes to his recruitment at Anfield.
