Sky presenter shares what the VAR said about Tottenham’s shout for a penalty right before Bukayo Saka goal

Dave Jones has shared what the VAR said about Tottenham Hotspur’s shout for a penalty right before Bukayo Saka’s goal for Arsenal today.

Tottenham endured a nightmare first half in today’s North London Derby as they headed into the break 3-0 down.

It was a strange 45 minutes for Spurs as they played well on the whole and dominated the ball for long periods.

But in what has proven to be a real weakness for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season, Arsenal netted twice from set-piece situations in the first half. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned the ball into his own net for the Gunners’ opener.

Tottenham thought they had levelled the game up just 10 minutes later through Micky van de Ven. But the goal was ruled out by the VAR as the Dutchman was marginally offside.

Bukayo Saka then handed Arsenal some breathing space just two minutes later as Arsenal hit Spurs on the counterattack. Yet, Tottenham had an appeal for a penalty waved away by Michael Oliver just moments before.

What the VAR said about Tottenham penalty shout vs Arsenal

Dejan Kulusevski went down in the penalty box just moments before Arsenal doubled their lead through Saka.

Leandro Trossard appeared to catch the Swede, which sent him tumbling to the ground.

Yet, Dave Jones has revealed that the incident was checked by the VAR but it was deemed there was ‘minimal contact’.

“It was checked. VAR said minimal contact,” the presenter said on Sky Sports.

Tottenham vs Arsenal

Arsenal went on to grab a third in the first half as Kai Havertz guided a header past Guglielmo Vicario from a corner.

It was a frustrating half for Spurs as their performance didn’t reflect the scoreline. But their defending ultimately let them down on three occasions.

Of course, it could have been a completely different game had Van de Ven’s equaliser stood.

But as has been the case on a few occasions this season, Spurs failed to do the basics and were punished by a ruthless Arsenal side.

Postecoglou’s men were gifted a goal in the 64th minute as David Raya‘s poor attempt at playing out handed Cristian Romero a straightforward finish.

It set up a nervy finish for the Gunners as Heung-min Son grabbed another back for Tottenham from the penalty spot.

Fortunately for Mikel Arteta, his side managed to hold on and pick up a crucial three points against their rivals.
