‘I am done with it’: Ian Wright and Tim Sherwood rage at Tottenham-Arsenal controversy

Tottenham and Arsenal entertained the masses once more as they played out a five-goal thriller in the north London derby on Sunday in the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta’s side opened the scoring after an own goal from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg following a corner.

That was 15 minutes into the game, it was Arsenal’s first corner and the Tottenham players were kicking themselves because they started the game well, only for set-piece issues to bite them in the back again.

Despite conceding that early goal, Ange Postecoglou’s players didn’t hold back and they continued to fight for that all-important equaliser.

They got their reward soon after when Micky van de Ven pounced on a loose ball and fired his team level to the delight of the Spurs supporters.

But like always, the home team started to dread the worst when VAR decided to check the goal for a possible offside and, by the smallest of margins, it was the case – VAR also had other matters to resolve.

The argument then turned to whether Takehiro Tomiyasu deliberately decided to block the ball as a shot was fired at him, with it being argued that it was accidental and not deliberate by the Arsenal man.

Even though he is coming at this with his Arsenal hat on, Ian Wright was left fuming with the call because he thinks van de Ven’s goal should have stood, as he told Premier League Productions (28/04/24 at 3:00 pm).

The former striker seemingly had no energy to complain because he stated ‘I don’t know how I am going to complain about that now because I am done with it’.

Wright was backed up by former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood and how he ‘can’t understand’ the call to rule the goal out either.

Micky van de Ven’s goal ruled out

“The shot comes in and it’s a deliberate attempt to block the shot and it falls to Micky van de Ven off Gabriel’s head,” said Sherwood.

“The second one isn’t deliberate, obviously. But here, if you see Tomiyasu, that’s a deliberate attempt to play the ball, it bounces off his knees into Gabriel’s back and then Micky van de Ven finishes it off. I just can’t understand why that is ruled out. He should be onside.”

Wright added: “It’s almost gone to a crazy place now, in respect from my opinion. The deflection is a deflection. I don’t know how I am going to get into to complain about that now because I am done with it. I am done with that!”

Will Tottenham aid Arsenal in the Premier League title race?

The worst possible result if you are a Spurs supporter because it keeps Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

Yes, it’s still in Manchester City’s hands and if they win their remaining matches, then they will be champions.

But one of Man City’s games in hand will be away at Spurs. If they beat the Treble winners, or just take a point off them, then it will all aid Arsenal.

All in all, these next few weeks won’t make pleasant viewing if you are at Hotspur Way because you could watch your bitter rivals go on and win the Premier League title.
