Celtic and injuries are two words that have been frequently mentioned in conjunction with each other this term.
Brendan Rodgers has needed to shuffle his squad around this campaign amid fitness issues involving Callum McGregor, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Reo Hatate, and Daizen Maeda, to name a few.
With the rising demand on players to play more matches than ever before on all fronts, injuries have increased ten fold in the footballing world, so it isn’t a major surprise that Celtic have been on the receiving end given our hefty fixture schedule.
Unfortunately, they have become commonplace, and other Scottish Premiership clubs have also had mounting numbers on the treatment table.
That being said, St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson has revealed that Celtic loanee Hyeokkyu Kwon has been ruled out of his side’s remaining fixtures this campaign after succumbing to a hamstring issue [BBC Sport].
Speaking to the press earlier today before the Buddies took on Rangers, the 49-year-old broke the news, stating: “Unfortunately, we’ve lost Kwon for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.”
Hyeokkyu Kwon’s bright loan spell away from Celtic at St Mirren
South Korea Under-23 international Kwon arrived in January at the SMiSA Stadium and made nine appearances in all competitions at St Mirren [Transfermarkt].
As per Sofascore, the 23-year-old has had a bright impact in Paisley, winning around 1.6 tackles per Scottish Premiership match alongside making five ball recoveries.
Acclimatising to Scottish football swiftly, St Mirren manager Robinson has previously signalled his desire to extend his stay at the club for next season.
The Lisburn native said back in February: “He came to the country and hasn’t played a lot. It’s getting him used to Scottish football, long throws and long balls at times that he maybe isn’t used to. The physicality of our game.
“He’s added that bit of quality and composure. It’s something we’d be very keen to get done. It’s possibly a long way off happening, but that would be in an ideal world for me.”
It is unclear where his long-term Celtic future lies; regardless, Kwon hasn’t done his chances of making a break for the first team under Rodgers any harm.
For now, hopefully, Kwon can enjoy a speedy recovery before we see if he will be integrated into the squad come pre-season.
