How to Feng Shui your home office to maximize focus and creativity

If you want to maximize the harmony and peace in your chaotic home office, then you should employ the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui.

Feng Shui originated in Chinese Astrology as far back as Neolithic China. Like most astrological practices, Feng Shui is a complex system that employs concepts like the five elements, Bagua, Chi, and what is known as the commanding position.

How to Feng Shui your home office setup

Though starting out in Feng Shui can be a little overwhelming given the amount of information that is available, it’s always best to start in one room and then expand. If you work from home, there is arguably no better place to start your Feng Shui journey than the home office.

Luckily, TikTok content creator Charles (@charlesids) offered a two-part video to his followers late last year. His posts have since received upwards of 800k views and 40k likes.

In part one, Charles said that you should never set your desk against the wall because it will “limit your opportunities and success.” If you’re wondering why, then it helps to picture that wall as an obstacle in your way, blocking you from success in the future.

“Instead, you should try sitting in the command position so you can take control of the room and more importantly, your work,” Charles explained. “Now don’t worry if this is not possible as you can improve the Feng Shui of your office by adding artwork that inspires you and a mirror that broadens your perspective.”

Continuing with his Feng Shui TED Talk in part 2, Charles highlighted the importance of window placement in your home office. Rather than have the light hitting your face where it might be distracting, he urged you to place your desk on the side.

“You can also feature plants in your workspace, here’s mine for example,” he said, showing off his spider plant. “Because plants are the wood element, and the wood element signifies growth and creativity.”

Finally, Charles urged his followers to keep their home office clean and decluttered as cleaning out rubbish will “declutter your thoughts.”

Feng Shui is great on paper

Lots of Charles’ followers seemed too keen to employ Feng Shui in their own homes, though admittedly, some struggled to grasp the concept.

One person wrote: “What if I don’t have a room for an office and it has to be in my room?”

“I have windows on three sides. I face the window to see my garden and the room is filled with plants,” someone else wrote, as a third added, “I have a laptop and monitor on my desk and I hate exposed wires. How would you recommend fixing this.”
