‘I think’: Gary Neville shares what he thinks Chelsea should do with manager Mauricio Pochettino

Pundit Gary Neville has now had his say on what Chelsea should be looking to do with Mauricio Pochettino at the helm.

He gave his opinion on his own podcast for Sky Sports off the back of Chelsea’s thrilling draw against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Things looked very glum for Pochettino at half-time on Saturday night, with the Blues 2-0 down away from home.

However, a spirited second half display saw his side rescue a point, and perhaps feel hard done by that they didn’t leave without all three.

VAR intervened late on to strike off a goal for Axel Disasi, noticeably angering Pochettino who is under pressure in his role.

Whatever the manager said at half-time clearly had an effect on his players, and he needs to lean into that for the rest of this season if they are to keep hold of him.

Gary Neville wants Pochettino to have more time

Neville believes they should be regardless though, saying he deserves more time to make things work in West London.

He said: “Definitely (that Pochettino deserves more time). I think he is absolutely the right man to work with young players. You have seen what he did at Southampton, bringing players through, developing them. We saw what he did here (at Tottenham Hotspur) with players.

“I wouldn’t mess with Mauricio Pochettino at all. I think Mauricio Pochettino definitely deserves another transfer window. I think he definitely deserves the idea of completing the jigsaw of the three positions that everyone knows are missing (striker, defender, goalkeeper).

“I think when he has got those three players in, maybe four because you might need two strikers, I think at that point, you would be saying, okay, then we will judge Mauricio Pochettino. I think it is far too early, and the reason I say that is I think their performance levels at times are very, very good. They hit a good level.”

It feels as if qualifying for Europe for next season is going to be the key for the Argentine to remain in the role going forwards.

This will see them need to be pretty perfect for the rest of the season, starting with the crunch London derby on Thursday against Tottenham.

Considering Chelsea fans are well aware of his connections to Spurs, a win and a real sign of passion from the boss would be a massive statement to even his biggest doubters that he can help turn things around going forward.
