Portuguese report: Big Amorim twist could be on the cards as West Ham official jets out to Portugal

West Ham United’s hopes of appointing Ruben Amorom seemed to be dead and buried last week.

News emerged this time last week that West Ham were holding a meeting with Ruben Amorim in London about the 39-year-old potentially taking over at the London Stadium.

With David Moyes being under intense pressure, the Sporting boss taking over from the Scot in the summer seemed like a very real prospect.

However, our dream seemed to be over before it really started, as a report claimed the deal to bring Amorim to West Ham was off, with the club lining up a move for Julen Lopetegui instead.

Amorim is one of the most exciting young managers in world football, but he missed out on the Liverpool job to Arne Slot, and was then forced into apologising to the Sporting fans and the players for heading off to London mid-season for talks with another club.

Any thoughts of Amorim swapping Lisbon for East London this summer seemed dead in the water after that.

However, there could well be a glimmer of hope for the West Ham fans who are pining for the Portuguese…

Big Ruben Amorim to West Ham twist could be on the cards

Amazingly, the talented young manager could still be up for grabs this summer.

And a Portuguese report has just kept the dream that he could replace Moyes alive for us.

According to Record (print edition April 29th, page 2), West Ham sent an official out to Portugal yesterday to watch the Porto vs Sporting clash.

The report highlighted how in the aftermath of the Hammers’ meeting with Amorim, the club sent someone to Estádio do Dragão to ‘take notes’.

So, maybe, just maybe, the dream of Amorim taking over at the London Stadium isn’t completely dead and buried.

And boy, what an unbelievable appointment he would be.

His Sporting side play some truly scintillating stuff, and his footballing philosophy is in stark contrast to that of Moyes.

So if a West Ham official was watching the Porto vs Sporting clash, who knows? One thing I will say is that we’ve been heavily linked with Sporting winger Pedro Goncalves, so maybe the Hammers ‘official’ was just out there to run his eye over the 25-year-old.

Still, I truly believe that Ruben Amorim taking over at West Ham this summer remains a genuine possibility.
