'Nowhere near': Alan Shearer says £34m Liverpool player just hasn't been good enough lately

Liverpool’s season has unravelled a touch in recent weeks and Alan Shearer has not been impressed by one of their players.

The Reds have had a nightmare run of form which has seen them exit Europe and become firm third favourites in the title race.

This weekend, Liverpool plodded their way to a draw against West Ham United in what was essentially a nail in the coffin of their title hopes.

Of course, the game was dominated by the argument between Mo Salah and Jurgen Klopp and the aftermath of all that came with it.

But away from the spat with Klopp, Salah’s form has not been great in general.

And speaking about Salah’s current predicament, Alan Shearer has suggested the forward is just nowhere near the levels he has shown previously.

Alan Shearer says Mo Salah is nowhere near the level he needs to be for Liverpool

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer raised his concerns over Salah’s form recently.

“Salah hasn’t been nowhere near what he has been in the past. It has certainly been a quiet period for him ever since he came back from the Africa Cup of Nations. He has not been anywhere near as good as he can be, has he?,” Shearer said.

Mo Salah’s form is a problem for Liverpool

At the end of the day, Liverpool needed their biggest and best players to produce when it mattered and ultimately, Salah has not managed it.

He’s scored just twice in the last eight games and in those eight games, he’s been on the bench three times.

This weekend felt a bit like a turning point for Salah. And while reports are suggesting he will remain at Anfield this summer, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him sold.

Unlike Arsenal with the likes of Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka recently, Salah has essentially gone missing when it mattered the most for Liverpool.

If he is to stay next season, then Liverpool and new manager Arne Slot will want him to deliver.
