'Been outstanding': Micah Richards says he actually feels sorry for one Liverpool player this season

Liverpool’s season has taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks but Micah Richards says he actually feels a bit sorry for one of their stars.

The Reds drew with West Ham this weekend and saw both Arsenal and Manchester City win to all but end any faint hopes of winning the title.

Once again, Liverpool missed a hatful of chances over the game but overall, it was a stuttering performance that didn’t indicate a team pushing to win titles.

The likes of Luis Diaz and the rest of the Liverpool forwards were guilty of missing chances again. While in defence, Liverpool looked shaky as West Ham tested them throughout.

The back four this weekend was made up of Robertson, Alexander-Arnold, Quansah and Van Dijk.

And speaking about one of those players, Virgil van Dijk, pundit Micah Richards has suggested he actually feels a touch sorry for the Liverpool skipper.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast about Liverpool and Van Dijk in particular, Richards suggested the Dutchman has had to be faultless due to the amount of partners he’s played with.

“I think Van Dijk has been outstanding this season, but he has constantly had to chop and change centre-half partners whether that’s Konate or Quansah. It has been difficult. He has had to be flawless for big parts of the season,” Richards said.

Quite how Arne Slot plans on using Van Dijk next season and who he has as his partner, remains to be seen.

Ibou Konate has struggled while Jarrell Quansah is still a young man finding his way in the game.

Slot, then, could well look to add another defender as he looks to make his mark on the Reds.
