If reports are true, it now makes sense for Leeds to agree swap deal with Premier League giants - opinion

Leeds United are interested in signing a Liverpool defender in the summer but to might make sense to include him in a player-plus-cash deal with the Anfield club.

That is because Liverpool have been scouting Crysencio Summerville after the Dutchman was announced as the Championship Player of the Season. The 22-year-old has laid on 30 goals and assists for Leeds.

Summerville chose to remain at Elland Road last summer after relegation and it has worked in his favour, starring for Daniel Farke’s side and becoming a fan favourite. But his future could hinge on promotion.

An instant return to the Premier League could see Summerville choose to stay put. But another season in the Championship is likely to make a number of Leeds players consider their futures come the summer.

Summerville is likely to be one and with Liverpool showing an interest in the pocket-sized ace, there is a feeling of an inevitability that he would move to The Reds especially if Arne Slot does become manager.

If Leeds are going to lose Summerville, one crumb of comfort could be that it kills two birds with one stone for The Whites and they are in a position to request a target of their own, in Nat Phillips.

Leeds are interested in Liverpool defender Nat Phillips

Not for the first time. Last summer, Leeds were said to be in advanced talks to land powerful centre-back Phillips. Reports say that whether or not Leeds get promoted they want to land Phillips from Liverpool.

The 26-year-old is currently out on loan for the second time this season after going north of the border to Celtic under Brendan Rodgers. But he managed just eight appearances in the first half of the season.

He moved to Cardiff and it has seen him thrive, helping the Welsh side win eight of his 17 appearances. But it is unclear as to how much he will cost, with two years left on his £24k-a-week Anfield contract.

There’s a deal to be done between Liverpool and Leeds

Obviously, Leeds will not want to lose Summerville but promotion or not a move to Anfield will really tempt the player and his representatives. A side that have a Dutch feel about them, and is growing.

Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and incoming gaffer Slot. Anfield is the place where Summerville’s career got going at this level, scoring the winner as Jesse Marsch’s side beat Liverpool 2-1.

If Liverpool are to move for Summerville and the Leeds ace chooses to go which is a distinct possibility, at least Leeds can bring in a target of their own by requesting Phillips as part of a player-plus-cash deal.
