'Probably won’t be the case': Stockport County boss shares prediction about Wrexham in League One

Wrexham ended the League Two campaign on a real high by beating champions Stockport County 2-1 at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday afternoon.

With promotion already secured, you could have hardly blamed Wrexham players for taking the last few weeks of the season a little easier.

Wrexham had just two games to go after sealing promotion with a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers and players may have had the summer on their minds.

Instead, Wrexham have added two more wins to the tally, finishing the season in style in the process.

The 3-0 win at Crewe Alexandra was followed up by Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Stockport County, coming from behind to claim all three points.

Ollie Palmer and Andy Cannon were both on the scoresheet to flip the game on its head and ensure that Wrexham ended the season on a high.

Wrexham and Stockport have been promotion rivals in two of the last three seasons but now head to League One together.

The Hatters go up as champions and Wrexham did the right thing, giving them a guard of honour as they entered the STōK Cae Ras pitch on Saturday.

Stockport County boss on Wrexham

Both clubs have been on an upward trajectory in recent years and who could genuinely rule out both teams going for promotion from League One in the coming years?

Wrexham may generate more headlines thanks to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds but Stockport have been just as impressive.

County boss Dave Challinor has now secured two promotions in three years and he has given his verdict on Wrexham’s prospects.

Speaking to The Athletic, Challinor suggested that Wrexham will ‘look to really go again’ and push for a third promotion in a row.

Challinor thinks that Stockport’s approach must be a little different, believing that they need to go steady and build up gradually.

Challinor accepts that Stockport bought players to win promotions but is now expecting Wrexham to outspend them in League One.

“We are bang on schedule,” said Challinor. “The two clubs are very different in terms of where we are at. We went through a buying phase, where we went to get the players in to get us to this point. We now need to go a little bit differently and look to build. Whereas from Wrexham’s perspective, that probably won’t be the case. They will look to really go again,” he added.

All eyes on Wrexham

Maybe that is just Challinor’s way of putting more pressure on Wrexham ahead of another battle between the two clubs next season.

Wrexham will be one of the big storylines heading into the League One season and Challinor won’t be the only person just ramping up the pressure.

There will be many people out there wanting to see Wrexham fail, such is the way of football fans.

Wrexham are back in League One for the first time since 2005 and even neutrals will be interested to see how Wrexham attack the third tier after such a meteoric rise.

McElhenney and Reynolds will have their plan in mind and Wrexham fans would no doubt love to finish above Stockport next season having seen them lift the League Two title.
