Alan Shearer accuses Man Utd star of taking ‘big dive’ vs Burnley and says he’s ‘lucky’ to have avoided booking

Premier League legend Alan Shearer has taken aim at one Manchester United star after accusing him of diving in the 1-1 draw against Burnley at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have won only one of their last five Premier League matches, with the Red Devils slipping up against Burnley after leading in the second half on Saturday.

Antony had broken the deadlock late in the second half with a fantastic finish, only for the Red Devils to blow their advantage eight minutes later.

A VAR intervention ruled that Andre Onana had clattered into his opponent during a challenge and Burnley were awarded a penalty at Old Trafford.

Zeki Amdouni stepped up for Burnley and buried the ball past Andre Onana to ensure that Vincent Kompany’s men snatched a point against United.

Erik ten Hag’s men languish in sixth place in the league table and are 13 points adrift from fourth-place Aston Villa, who have played one match more than United.

Despite the Red Devils having a match in hand over Aston Villa, United are now unable to catch up to Unai Emery’s men in their last four remaining league matches.

United’s dwindling form in recent weeks ensured that Erik ten Hag’s hopes of a top-four challenge and a return to Champions League football for next season are over.

Shearer critical of Man Utd star

Speaking on Match of the Day, Alan Shearer dropped his verdict on whether or not Manchester United should have been awarded a penalty against Burnley.

Alejandro Garnacho was at the centre of two of the three incidents where United felt that they should have been awarded a spot-kick at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old Spain-born winger was met with contact from Sander Berge and went down inside the box on one occasion.

Another incident in the match included Alejandro Garnacho appearing to dive during a fight for the ball with Dara O’Shea, with United again denied a penalty.

Referee John Brooks didn’t award a penalty on either incident involving Garnacho and VAR did not intervene either.

Shearer believed that John Brooks made the right call and accused United winger Garnacho of taking a “big dive” in at least one of the two incidents.

“The referee got them right,” he said, as per the Metro.

“He tries to initiate the contact [with Berge] here, Garnacho. He sticks his right leg out to make the contact. It’s the right decision, never a penalty.

“This [second one] is a big dive. He’s lucky not to get a yellow card.”

Shearer spotlighted the other incident for United after the ball hit the arm of Vitinho following Antony’s shot, with the Newcastle legend again saying it wasn’t a penalty.

“He got the decision right again,” he added.

“He’s too close to him. His arms are by his side. The referee got all three decisions correct.”

Ten Hag on ‘very frustrating’ match for Man Utd

Speaking after the Burnley match, Ten Hag vented his frustration at United putting themselves in a “winning position” before squandering their advantage.

“Ours was a strong start to the game but, in the second part of the first half, we lost control,” he said (via Manchester United’s official website).

“We came back into the game and had good chances as well but Andre saved us a couple of times.

“The second half again was all ours, with loads of chances, but you could say, by the end of it, we gave the game away. It’s very frustrating. It shouldn’t happen.

“Again, we put ourselves in a winning position, the most difficult [thing] in football, and, in many phases of the game, we did very good.

“Then, in the end, we have to take three points and keep a clean sheet. But we gave it away. It’s very frustrating.”
