Report: 23-year-old who Leeds wanted last summer is now set to leave current club on a free

Leeds United are likely to be in for a busy summer transfer window regardless of how this season finishes.

The Whites currently sit second in the Championship ahead of the final day of the campaign on Saturday but the top two is still very much out of Leeds‘ hands.

Ipswich Town play their game in hand at Coventry City this evening and a win would ensure they need just a point at home to Huddersfield Town to seal promotion, regardless of how Leeds get on against Southampton.

If Leeds do remain in the Championship, there could well be a major squad overhaul. With £190 million of unpaid transfer instalments hanging over them, the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Willy Gnonto could all attract interest to help offset that figure.

On the other hand, promotion would bring a far more exciting window in that it would be all about strengthening the squad, as apposed to who could leave.

Leeds have already been linked with a few, including Luca Netz of Borussia Monchengladbach and even a potential return for Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

2023 Leeds target Brandon Williams to leave Manchester United on a free

Free transfers could well be a good avenue for Leeds to help rebuild their squad on a budget if they do remain in the Championship.

Every single summer there are always some excellent pickups to be found for nothing, and according to the Daily Telegraph, a player Leeds wanted last summer is set to be available.

Leeds were in the market for a new full-back for the majority of the window almost 12 months and one player they were keen on signing was Manchester United’s Brandon Williams.

However, Williams ended up making the move to Leeds’ promotion rivals Ipswich, though he has not played since the Tractor Boys’ final match of 2023.

And so after a tricky season, Man United have seemingly opted against handing the 23-year-old a new deal, meaning he will be free to find a new club this summer.

What has Daniel Farke previously said on Williams?

Williams is a player Leeds boss Daniel Farke has actually worked with before, as he was responsible for signing him during his time at Norwich City.

Farke is clearly a big fan of Williams having claimed back when he arrived at Carrow Road that he is a player who can get to the very ‘top level’.

“Brandon is a young player full of potential. He has already proven that he can perform on the top level and that he is capable of playing for Manchester United. He has many good skills and qualities.

“We wanted to bring someone in who was capable of playing in the full-back positions to strengthen our squad. Brandon has played a lot at left-back for Manchester United, but we know he is also capable of playing on the right side, too.”
