Report: £21m Newcastle player is more likely than Joelinton to return from injury vs Burnley on Saturday

Newcastle United have multiple first-team players closing in on a return from injury, with Eddie Howe no doubt keen to bolster his squad against Burnley.

The Magpies head to Turf Moor to take on a resurgent Burnley side on Saturday, with Vincent Kompany’s side suddenly having a chance of survival. That is a complete contrast to Sheffield United, who Newcastle United relegated at the weekend with a 5-1 win.

That proved to be a tough game, and this should be even more challenging. The Magpies have been poor away from home for the entire campaign, and that continued last week with a desperate display against Crystal Palace.

But Howe’s side could be boosted by some players returning from injury, with the likes of Miguel Almiron, Joelinton, Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier not a million miles away from getting over their respective fitness problems.

Kieran Trippier will not return against Burnley

We already know that it will not be Trippier returning at the weekend, as Newcastle prepare to face his former club.

The 33-year-old is currently out of action for a groin injury, and is not expected to be back on Saturday. Instead, Newcastle are hopeful that he will be fit in time for the home clash with Brighton on May 11th.

That would mean Trippier is available for the final three games of the season, as he aims to prove his fitness ahead of Euro 2024.

Which Newcastle player is most likely to return from injury on Saturday

But if one player is going to return from injury on Saturday, the Athletic believe that it most likely will be Miguel Almiron.

They state that the £21million player has the best chance of returning out of Newcastle United’s injured stars.

The Athletic add that they also do not anticipate Trippier being involved against Burnley, while they state that Pope and Joelinton still need a bit more time before they are available for selection.

Newcastle could do with Joelinton back

Out of those four injured players, it is probably Pope and Joelinton who the Magpies miss the most.

Martin Dubravka is a very different goalkeeper to Pope, and that has changed the way in which Newcastle United defend – and not for the better. The sooner Pope is available the better, although it is Joelinton who is probably required more right now.

Eddie Howe is very short of midfield options, with Bruno Guimaraes, Elliot Anderson and Sean Longstaff his only fit players in the middle of the park. And the latter is massively struggling for form right now, putting in a poor display against Sheffield United.

Longstaff could do with some time out of the side, but that simply is not possible right now – and it will not be until Joelinton is fit once again.

But it sounds like he will not be ready in time for Saturday, while there is hope that Almiron could give Howe some additional depth in attack. His forward options have really been boosted as of late, with Callum Wilson back after a pectoral problem.
