Sunderland chances of appointing 'fantastic' EFL boss this summer are now all but over - opinion

One of the managers linked with Sunderland may not be on the move this summer.

Sunderland are heading towards a pivotal summer wherein their managerial appointment is top of their to-do list.

Aside from bolstering the first-team squad in the necessary areas, the Black Cats are tasked with arguably their biggest managerial appointment of the Kyril Louis-Dreyfus era so far.

The fans are at something of an impasse where the hierarchy is regarded and so Louis-Dreyfus and co need to convince the fans of the ambitions and abilities, and bring in the right manager.

There’s a new name on the list of managers linked with Sunderland; Rene Maric.

The current Bayern Munich U19s boss has been linked with the vacancy at the Stadium of Light ahead of the summer.

Maric, 31, has previously worked as a coach with the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Leeds United, and could well land his first managerial gig with Sunderland this summer.

Paul Heckingbottom‘s name hasn’t been mentioned in a while now, whilst reports last week revealed that Will Still remains a person of interest on Wearside.

Jermain Defoe has once again outlined his interest in replacing Michael Beale this summer, though he’s not thought to be under serious consideration.

Another name who was reported to be on Sunderland’s managerial shortlist ahead of the summer is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.

The former German national team no.2, as well as the Bayern Munich no.2 has turned heads with Wednesday this season.

At 31 years old he’s the Football League’s youngest boss.

But he’s shown no signs of inexperience since taking charge at Hillsborough in October, amassing 50 points in the Championship and having the Owls on the verge of safety ahead of their final day showdown against Sunderland.

Sheffield Wednesday sit in 20th place of the table and have a three-point gap to Birmingham City in 22nd, with Plymouth Argyle wedged in between.

The Owls now look likely to stay in the division, which will all but kill Sunderland’s chances of hiring him this summer.

Pundit Carlton Palmer previously described Rohl’s work at Sheffield Wednesday as ‘fantastic’.

Danny Rohl now likely to stay at Sheffield Wednesday

Rohl has built a huge connection with Sheffield Wednesday.

He’s adored by their fans and he’ll go down in club history if he manages to keep them in the Championship, which now looks more likely than unlikely.

And if Wednesday stay in the division then it surely boosts the chances of Rohl staying at the club, all but quashing any Sunderland chances of hiring the German this summer.

But for Louis-Dreyfus and co, there’s other names on the radar.

Also, if Rohl doesn’t get the backing he wants at Sheffield Wednesday then he may look for a move later in the summer, or during next season.

But by which point Sunderland will hopefully have a good manager in place.

Sunderland and Rohl’s paths may cross one day, but for the time being it doesn’t look like it’ll happen this summer.
