'The target': Enzo Maresca shares what Leicester City's aim is in the Premier League next season

Leicester City wrapped up the Championship title in style last night, brushing aside Preston North End 3-0 at Deepdale.

Enzo Maresca‘s side led through Jamie Vardy before he added a second shortly after half-time and Kasey McAteer rounded off the scoring with the third, nodding in Abdul Fatawu‘s left-footed cross.

It moved The Foxes on to 97 points ahead of the clash against Blackburn Rovers at King Power Stadium this weekend.

Victory for City would take their tally to 100 points and it would also break their previous record, tied with Reading, of most wins (32) in a Championship season since the turn of the century.

Promotion has been secured and now the Championship title, too.

But Maresca’s side still have one more job to do this weekend; to reach 100 points.

That is the hallmark of all great second-tier teams, so as the party winds down this week, they’ll be laser-focused on fulfilling the final goal of the campaign.

Against North End, City played with great freedom and they have the chance to really express themselves against John Eustace’s team in front of The Foxes faithful on Saturday.

It could see a number of fringe players given the opportunity from the first whistle and perhaps a few of the academy stars.

Enzo Maresca reveals Leicester City’s target next season

One more game is left to play this term but club chiefs will already have an eye on next season. The planning will be well underway, with the summer transfer window fast approaching.

Maresca has revealed what the target is back in the Premier League: “In case we get promoted, next year, the target is not the Premier League, the target is not the FA Cup. The target has to be to maintain, to avoid the relegation.

“So far after one year, too many people have still fresh in their mind the things this club achieved. I understand that to switch from that to the relegation is not easy. Probably it has been the most difficult thing.”

The Italian head coach is clearly trying to lessen expectations, which is completely understandable, as it will be a lot tougher next season, with a potential points deduction looming.

But for now, everyone connected to Leicester should just enjoy this moment.
