'Very good': BBC pundit explains why timing of Thiago Silva Chelsea exit could actually be perfect

Chelsea will say goodbye to central defender Thiago Silva at the end of the season.

Thiago Silva confirmed yesterday that he will be leaving Chelsea when his contract expires in the summer.

The Blues signed the 39-year-old from Paris Saint-Germain back in 2020 and he has been a great addition to their squad.

Despite his age, Silva has gone on to make 151 appearances for Chelsea.

Some initially had doubts about Silva’s move to Stamford Bridge because he was in his mid-30s, but he quickly quashed them.

Leon Osman backs Thiago Silva’s decision to announce Chelsea exit

Silva’s announcement that he will be leaving Chelsea comes with a few games still left to play.

However, former Everton midfielder Leon Osman does not think it will be a distraction and believes it has come at a good time.

Speaking about Silva and his decision to confirm his Chelsea exit now on The Monday Night Club, the BBC pundit said: “He is an outstanding footballer. He has won everything there is to win in the game. He may have come over here for a bit, but ended up falling in love with the club and winning trophies and wanting to stay, you can see his attachment, I like all of that.

“I think Chelsea fans know his qualities. I think every club he has played for fans know his qualities and what he does. He has had a brilliant career, and I think the timing of the video is very good as well. You make the announcement with a couple of games to go, so you can really enjoy the last couple of games, but it’s not a distraction [like] before when you get asked for months over a certain situation.”

Thiago Silva’s trophies

Since joining Chelsea, Silva has gone on to win the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

However, the Brazilian should be leaving Stamford Bridge with so much more than that.

At Chelsea, he has also lost two FA Cup finals and two Carabao Cup finals, missing out to Liverpool on three of those occasions.

Managing to get his hands on the Champions League trophy, though, Silva can still be more than pleased with what he managed to achieve in a Chelsea shirt. In his four years at the club, there have been some highs and lows, but the highs have been extremely high.
