Stan Collymore predicts what Aston Villa will be thinking after latest Premier League decision

Stan Collymore has predicted what Aston Villa will be thinking after Premier League clubs agreed ‘in principle’ to introduce a salary cap.

Per Sky News, top-flight clubs have agreed to implement a cap on squad spending before new regulations are formulated.

It’s believed clubs still have to agree on whether to anchor the spending to a multiple of the league’s lowest-earning club. The plans could now advance to the AGM, which will take place in June.

Aston Villa, along with Manchester City and Manchester United, are believed to have been the three clubs that opposed the idea.

Now, taking it to X on Monday, Collymore has shared his view on his former club’s stance.

Collymore has never been shy about voicing his opinion and was particularly critical of his beloved Villa after the Premier League decided to shoot down a £900million deal for the EFL.

He said: “Never felt as dismayed as seeing my club, founders no less, chose greed and self-preservation over a 100+-year-old unique football pyramid.”

The 53-year-old has now cast his view on the latest news and can understand why the club he supports voted against a salary cap.

He wrote on X: “Personally disappointed that all clubs haven’t adopted it universally, will make league more competitive and stop “creative sponsorships”.

“But from Villa’s perspective, they’ll be saying, ‘other clubs have had 25 years to make hay, why can’t we now we’re on the cusp of something special.”

Change is coming for Premier League clubs

The presence of Manchester City has, unfortunately, made the Premier League lose its spark. And with the champions under investigation, it’s evident the authorities failed to clamp down on the laws they set.

Collymore is correct; for Villa, a salary cap would be frustrating. However, for the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the competition, it’s something that needs to occur.

Preventing obscene and over-the-top sums splashed out on a regular basis can only be a good thing for the longevity of English football.
