'He had everything': Micah Richards says player Man City let go in 2020 was actually better than Arjen Robben

Micah Richards has stated that Manchester City used to have a player who was superior in the Premier League to Arjen Robben.

Robben is associated with his time at Bayern Munich.

Out of all the leagues the Dutchman played in, it was in the Bundesliga where he was at his absolute best.

The retired winger left Real Madrid, where he had quite a forgettable spell to set the world alight in a Bayern shirt.

However, it was at Chelsea where Robben put himself on the map as a young player.

Even at Stamford Bridge, Arjen Robben showcased the world that he was a devastating winger.

It seemed inevitable that he would turn into a world-class player and he went down as a legend of the game.

Richards says player City sold in 2020 was better in the Premier League than Robben

The Champions League winner will be remembered as one of the greatest wingers the game has ever seen.

However, judging his time in the Premier League, while Robben was a class act, there are players at Manchester City who have outdone him.

For instance, Bernardo Silva certainly has a case to have done so.

Perhaps Bernardo and Robben’s spells at City and Bayern respectively are more comparable and in fairness, the latter would be considered as the superior player.

But in England, unlike the former Dutch wideman, the £43 million man has operated at a genuinely world-class level while winning the lot.

However, the player in question was not Bernardo Silva.

Instead, it was David Silva, who Micah Richards ranked as the third greatest left-footed player in Premier League history while naming Arjen Robben eighth in his list.

Richards, who played with Silva sang his praises, saying, “He was a joy to play with. On that right-hand side coming in, he made me look great. He did.”

“But he had everything. Touch, technique, weight of pass and he came at a time where he was probably, him, [Aleksandar] Kolarov, Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng came same time.”

Micah Richards revealed that he knew from day one when David Silva signed for Manchester City that he was a gem of a player.

“Day one. You know the boxes that you do? He just never gave it away and he was just…and he could tackle as well. Didn’t work as hard as others in terms of numbers but he didn’t need to. Just on the ball, he was delicate”, he said on BBC’s Match of the Day: Top 10 show.

David Silva was unquestionably superior to the Dutch legend in England

In the Premier League especially, Micah Richards fairly named David Silva much higher than Arjen Robben, in our view.

Robben had a quality spell in English football but Silva is one of the greatest players to have ever played in the country.

A player who was arguably the most important figure in City’s rise as an elite club and in four of their seven Premier League titles in total; the same perhaps cannot be said about the decorated winger, not just at Chelsea but even at Bayern, as they have always been a footballing giant.

If Micah Richards perhaps edged towards David Silva over Arjen Robben in general as well, the conversation would have been worth having, even though they were very different players.
