‘I’m hearing’: Richard Keys backs 50-year-old for Liverpool job, but says he will replace De Zerbi instead

It wasn’t so long ago that Roberto De Zerbi was the talk of the town and tipped to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The Italian guided Brighton and Hove Albion to their first-ever European finish last season and his stock was understandably high.

From Liverpool to Barcelona. Many thought a big job was coming his way, but now his struggling Brighton team can’t even buy a win.

Their recent Goal of the Month competition consisted of Burnley’s Arijanet Muric scoring a comical own goal against them.

It has been well-documented that Arne Slot will be Liverpool’s next manager, but he wasn’t the first name on everyone’s lips.

Richard Keys is certainly underwhelmed by the possibility of the Dutchman coming to Anfield because he feels they should look elsewhere and can bring in someone of a higher standing.

The beIN SPORTS presenter put forward the name of Brentford coach, Thomas Frank, as he wrote in his personal blog.

The 50-year-old has done a remarkable job at the London club, guiding them to the Premier League and now establishing them in the top tier.

Keys stated that Frank has been ‘unlucky’ not to be linked with the Liverpool manager’s job and added ‘why not’ push for his signature.

But rather than head to Merseyside, Keys shared that Frank will, instead, replace Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton at the end of the campaign because he is going to leave.

Thomas Frank as Liverpool manager

“At Brighton, Roberto De Zerbi continues to write his resignation letter,” said Keys.

“After the defeat to Bournemouth, he returned to a now familiar theme – but with a little bit of a twist. We already knew he doesn’t believe Brighton match his ambition (honestly – the arrogance) but now he’s turned on his players, who he says, ‘lack motivation’. Wow. It’s over.

“The Italian will leave at the end of the season – I’m hearing to be replaced by Thomas Frank, who can think himself unlucky not to have been linked with bigger jobs. Liverpool? Why not?”

All about timing

Football is all about timing and Frank falls into that category, without a doubt.

If Klopp had left 12 months earlier, then he would have probably been higher up the list when discussing Liverpool’s next manager.

This time last season, Brentford missed out on European football on the last day of the Premier League campaign.

That would have caught the attention of many, in comparison to what the Bees have had to go through now given the big injuries they have suffered and that suspension to Ivan Toney, which meant that they have remained in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
