26-year-old defender has quietly been one of Liverpool’s best players this season - opinion

Liverpool have a defender who has been quietly one of the club’s best players this season.

It’s difficult to place this season on a scale for Liverpool. On the one hand it’s a season that defied expectations.

Nobody will have predicted Liverpool to be in the conversation for the Premier League title for so long. However, Jurgen Klopp’s men surprised everyone by continuing an impressive run.

In the end, though, just as expectations started to increase, Liverpool started to deflate. Things have completely fallen apart in April, which means Liverpool now face a bitter end to the season.

But there are plenty of positives to take from this season. Most notably, the revival of Joe Gomez.

How Joe Gomez has become one of Liverpool’s best players this season

Before the start of this season many have written Joe Gomez off. There have been a section of supporters, who have wanted to sell him for a while now.

But this season, Gomez has proved just how valuable he is to this Liverpool team, and earned himself a return to the England national team in the process.

Gomez has filled in at right-back, centre-back, left-back and even holding midfielder for Jurgen Klopp this season.

He has become a utility man, but also a player who makes Liverpool better when he is on the pitch.

As Simon Brundish pointed out, Liverpool win 0.95 points more per game with Gomez on the pitch this season than when he isn’t.

What does the future hold for Joe Gomez?

Gomez definitely deserves more playing opportunities, and he will be starting with a clean slate under Liverpool’s likely new manager Arne Slot.

It will be interesting to see where Gomez fits into Slot’s plans. He’s been quite an underrated player over the last few years at Liverpool, and deserves more credit.

In the future, he should be aiming to be a regular starter in the team, rather than the utility man that he is right now.
