Chelsea have had some truly world-class players over the years.
Blues fans have been lucky enough to see the likes of Eden Hazard, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard over the years, but perhaps the best player Chelsea have had in recent history is a player they let go after just three seasons.
Chelsea have sold some incredible players during their history, from Mohamed Salah to Kevin De Bruyne, but one premature sale that isn’t mentioned so much is the sale of Arjen Robben.
The Dutchman was arguably the third best player of his generation behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and it’s easy to forget that he played for Chelsea.
Speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Micah Richards has been discussing Robben’s time in the Premier League, and he says that he was so underrated as a player.
Arjen Robben was underrated
Richards spoke about the Dutchman and his time at Chelsea.
“He was unbelievable. He was so underrated it was a joke. In the Premier League, where have you put him at number 10? You have to watch with the eyes not with the stats, poetry on the field,” Richards said
Arjen Robben is one of the greats
It’s hard to argue that Arjen Robben is one of the Premier League’s greatest ever players. After all, he only had three seasons in England.
However, he may well be one of the greatest to ever play in the Premier League.
The heights that Robben would eventually hit for Bayern Munich and the Netherlands were incredible, and we can only wonder what he could’ve achieved had he stayed in England at Chelsea.
Robben was a remarkable player, and while £25m was a very good fee at the time, we can’t help but think that Chelsea must regret selling him to Real Madrid back in 2007.
