M11 crash: Man, 42, arrested after woman in her 40s dies in single-vehicle collision at junction 8 near Bishop’s Stortford

A woman in her 40s died at the scene of a crash on the M11 north of Bishop’s Stortford on Sunday morning (April 28).

A 42-year-old man from Cambridge has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains in Essex Police custody.

Police have issued an appeal for dashcam footage and witnesses to the incident, which involved a single vehicle, a grey Citroen, and happened just before 6am, near Newport.

The motorway was closed in both directions for several hours to allow police to carry out their investigation and for the vehicle involved to be recovered.

The northbound carriageway between junctions 8 (Stortford, Stansted Airport, A120) and 9 (Saffron Walden/A11) reopened first and at 1.40pm National Highways announced that the southbound lanes, between junctions 10 (Duxford/Royston) and 8, were also open to traffic again.

An Essex Police statement released soon after midday said: “Officers were called to junction 8 of the M11 shortly before 6am this morning (28 April) following a single-vehicle collision. Emergency services attended and the road was quickly closed.
