Report: Newcastle United have made a move to appoint 'excellent' former Chelsea manager

Newcastle United have been linked with a stunning move for a former Chelsea manager.

Newcastle have endured a topsy-turvy season which has seen them dumped out of the Champions League group stages.

It’s been a campaign plagued by injuries but notwithstanding that, the performances have fallen below par at times.

As such, Eddie Howe has come under large scrutiny with many suggesting it may be time to depart St James’ Park.

Aspirations of achieving a top-four finish are long gone but they still could achieve European football, as a top-six finish remains in reach.

Howe, as previously alluded to, has had to contend with a multitude of injuries that in truth, has never been seen before in the Premier League.

The extent of Newcastle’s injuries can’t be understated and taking that into consideration, it’s hard to find a reasonable explanation to justify sacking him.

Further, if the Tynesiders are to achieve European football this term, that would be an outstanding achievement and one that warrants another season, at least.

Though, with that said, it seems the board are keen on bringing in an ‘excellent’ former Chelsea boss to replace him in the summer.

Newcastle United want Maurizio Sarri

It has just come to light on Monday afternoon, that Newcastle want to appoint former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri as Howe’s successor, as per Tutto Mercato.

The Italian outlet claims The Magpies are in ‘pole position’ to land the 65-year-old, who left Lazio in March.

Further, it’s claimed Newcastle have already offered a proposal to Sarri, though, the situation could change between now and the end of the season.

Howe’s side have won four of their last six games and are just one point adrift of sixth-placed Manchester United.

They seem to have turned a corner and it would be bizarre to boot him out the door at this stage, given the current momentum.

So it would seem, should the ex-Bournemouth boss lead Newcastle to European football, club chiefs would retract their offer to Sarri.

A telling couple of weeks await Howe and the North East club.
