'His best is yet to come': Gary Lineker says 'brilliant' Man City player can still seriously improve

Gary Lineker has stated that Manchester City have a player who can still improve quite a lot.

While City have players in their squad who are all-time greats, they also have individuals who have room for improvement, despite being top players.

For instance, Julian Alvarez.

The World Cup winner is a brilliant talent.

But to say the £14 million man is the finished article would be far from the truth.

In November, Stefan Ortega described the Argentine as an “incredible player” but he stressed that his teammate can still improve.

Erling Haaland is far closer to being the finished article than Julian Alvarez, for example.

Lineker says Man City have a player who can still improve

However, to conclude that Haaland has no areas for improvement would be false as strikers especially improve when they reach their mid to late twenties.

In theory, some might argue that every footballer in the world can better their game.

But after a point, it becomes difficult in a player’s career when they hit the ceiling of their talent.

After a certain age as well, even greats struggle to reach new heights.

Luckily for Manchester City, they have a sensational group of players who still have plenty of gears to go before they reach their peak.

One of them has arguably been City’s best player this season.

That is Phil Foden, who Gary Lineker feels can still go up several levels.

Lineker hinted on BBC’s Match of the Day: Top 10 show at why Foden was not ranked higher by Richards in a list including the Premier League’s greatest-ever left-footed players, as he asked, “[Phil] Foden, you’re a Manchester City man, is that his age?

Micah Richards, who ranked him in ninth place in his list responded, “It’s just age. He’s been brilliant, hasn’t he but he’s in a great team. He’s a superstar but I just think…”

Lineker replied, “His best is yet to come.”

Micah Richards said, “Yeah!”

Gary Lineker is right about Phil Foden

Gary Lineker, who hailed Phil Foden as “outrageously brilliant” needs no reminding of how much quality he possesses.

Nor does Lineker need to be told about how influential Foden has been for City this season.

But at 23 years of age, the Sky Blues’ number 47 still has plenty of gears to reach to become the best version of himself; as one would have claimed about Kevin De Bruyne at the same age.

In our view, the Englishman has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or one day and have plenty of seasons where he is in contention to win football’s biggest individual award.

Foden will perhaps only reach that point where he usurps De Bruyne as his side’s primary attacking midfielder and further hones his game.

Phil Foden has a hugely exciting career awaiting him and Gary Lineker is seemingly cognizant of that.
