Report: Chelsea are set to lose a £35m player who Mauricio Pochettino called 'quality' this summer

Chelsea look set to lose a £35m-rated player this summer transfer window.

Chelsea are expected to be busy in the transfer window again, as they have been since Todd Boehly‘s takeover in 2022.

Mauricio Pochettino has a lot of work to do in order to get The Blues back towards the upper echelons of the Premier League table.

The Argentinian head coach is on course to finish inside the top 10 but still well short of European football.

With that said, it seems he may be losing a player who he really rates.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Ian Maatsen is ‘very happy’ on loan at Borussia Dortmund and the Bundesliga outfit want to keep him.

Maatsen has a £35m release clause in his Blues contract and if Dortmund can get their finances aligned, it seems they’ll be activating it.

The 22-year-old has become a fixture of Edin Terzic’s side and netted a brilliant goal in the 4-2 Champions League quarter-final win against Atletico Madrid earlier this month.

Chelsea will likely look to move on a number of first-teamers this summer and Maatsen looks as though he’ll be one of the first out of the door.

Chelsea could rue Ian Maatsen’s possible departure

Pochettino was ‘so happy’ with Maatsen in pre-season and explained that he’d be part of his plans.

For whatever reason, it hasn’t quite worked out like that but nonetheless, given his age, it’s unlikely Pochettino, given his track record of developing young players, would want to sanction a sale.

It’s been well documented that The Blues are verging on the edge of Financial Fair Play issues, so perhaps the club were the ones pushing for Maatsen’s exit rather than the Argentine boss.

Considering how much Pochettino waxed lyrical about Maatsen in the summer, it wouldn’t at all be surprising if he wanted the former Burnley loanee part of his squad next term following the successful spell at Dortmund.

But that probably won’t be the case and Chelsea may be left to rue the transfer.
