Wrexham must plot reunion with ‘electric’ Paul Mullin partner this summer, he’ll cost £0 - opinion

Wrexham could launch a move for one of their former players to partner Paul Mullin up front in League One.

Wrexham are preparing for their biggest challenge yet as they make the step up to League One.

Having achieved promotion from this level with three different clubs previously, Phil Parkinson knows the challenges that lay ahead and will be armed with the funds to bolster his squad.

Ryan Reynolds has already said he’ll do whatever it takes to earn a third consecutive promotion while Rob McElhenney wants to win right now.

The ambitious Hollywood owners seem intent on taking Wrexham into the Championship at the first time of asking, although several areas of their squad will need improving, including striker.

Notts County goal machine Macaulay Langstaff has already been linked with a move to Wales, but capturing the 27-year-old will require the Reds to break their transfer record a few times over.

A cost-efficient approach to finding a partner for Paul Mullin would be to look in the free agent market and resign one of their former players.

Wrexham should sign Kayden Jackson to partner Paul Mullin

Wrexham supporters will remember Kayden Jackson leading their line in the 2015/16 campaign.

He was captured on a permanent deal from Tamworth, posted 12 goal contributions in 34 appearances and was then snapped up by Barnsley the following year.

Jackson arrived at the Racecourse Ground as a 21-year-old and has since enjoyed a successful career in the EFL, playing most of his football at Ipswich Town.

Now 30-years-old, the talented frontman is currently a backup striker at Portman Road, often deployed from the bench in matches.

Although his record of 28 goals in 197 appearances for Ipswich is far from prolific, he has bagged some crucial goals this season in his side’s pursuit of promotion, including the equaliser against Sunderland in January.

Jackson is on the periphery of the action under Kieran McKenna and with his contract expiring this summer, Wrexham should look to snap him up on a free transfer.

What would Kayden Jackson bring to Wrexham?

Wrexham’s forward line is currently lacking one key attribute and that is pace.

Steven Fletcher and Ollie Palmer are physical strikers while Mullin and Marriot are deadly in the box.

Of their four main options up top, Marriott is the quickest, but the addition of Jackson would add some much-needed pace to their forward line in behind.

Described as “electric” by writer Andy Warren, Jackson could act as the perfect foil for Mullin, especially in matches where Wrexham are forced into playing on the counter.

The former Barnsley forward would give Parkinson’s men an injection of energy and athleticism in transition, with Mullin potentially feeding off his willing runs.

Jackson also boasts tremendous League One experience, playing 108 times in the third tier for various clubs.

Indeed, capturing the livewire striker – who looks set to depart Ipswich – feels like a no-brainer.
