One dead, one injured in shooting near New Jersey City University campus

One man was shot dead and another wounded in shooting in near New Jersey City University early Tuesday morning,the second fatal shooting in Hudson County in a 25-hour span.

Shots rang out in the area of College Street and Audubon Avenue in Jersey City at 12:40 a.m. and David Jones, 24, a city resident, was shot in the upper body, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Responding Jersey City police officers found Jones unresponsive and he was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:35 a.m. A 23-year-old man, who was not identified, was located nearby with an apparent gunshot wound to an upper extremity.

College Street is located just west of the NJCU campus, a short block lined with attached brick homes.

A note at the top of the New Jersey City University website’s home page alerted students and staff that “members of the Jersey City Police may be on Audubon Avenue during the day investigating an incident that occurred off campus overnight. The JCPD, in conjunction with NJCU Public Safety, have determined this was an isolated incident posing no threat to the university community.”

Late Sunday night a former Hoboken High School football and basketball star,21-year-old Damon Murray, was shot dead outside a Hoboken Housing Authority building.

The homicide is Jersey City’s third of the year and fourth in Hudson County in 2024. Police said in radio transmissions that a handgun and shell casings were recovered on College Street near Audubon Avenue. Also a home on Audubon Avenue was struck by gunfire.

Police said in radio transmission that the second victim was going to be charged with drug possession.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating the circumstances of this case.
