Bayern donate €500,000 to Franz Beckenbauer Foundation

Bayern Munich donated €500,000 ($534,000) to the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation on Tuesday after a fundraising drive following the German football great's death in January aged 78.

The foundation supports the disabled and people in need.

Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen and chief financial officer Michael Diederich presented a large cheque on the pitch to widow Heidi Beckenbauer, who came to the Allianz Arena with her son Joel for the Champions League semi-final first leg against Real Madrid.

"We said after Franz Beckenbauer's farewell that we wanted to do something. We are delighted and very proud to be able to hand over €500,000 to the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation today," Dreesen said before kick-off.

"This fantastic sum came from the auctions of the jerseys with the inscription ‘Thank you Franz’, which our players wore in honour of Franz against Hoffenheim, from the sale of merchandise and from numerous donations from our fans."

Heidi Beckenbauer said: "On behalf of the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation, we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this fantastic donation. Franz supported people in need for years."
