'I've already heard': Ornstein says insiders at Liverpool have told him what they want in the transfer window

With just over two weeks of the season left, Liverpool are making preparations for what looks like being a busy summer.

The Reds are all set to announce that Arne Slot has been the man chosen to continue Jurgen Klopp’s incredible legacy at the club.

Klopp has rebuilt his team over the past couple of years, meaning that the Liverpool squad is in a good place for Slot’s arrival.

However, there are still some pretty clear upgrades needed if the Reds are to push harder for the Premier League title in 2024/25.

As journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday, one key area Liverpool are targeting is at centre-back. Slot will need a new player in his defence. And now, another heavyweight reporter – David Ornstein – has claimed that the Reds will look to bolster another position, too.

What has David Ornstein said about Liverpool

Ornstein is always a good voice to listen to in terms of transfer goings on. The journalist has his finger right on the pulse of what’s happening.

This week, he has been breaking some positive news for Liverpool. It has been Ornstein who has taken the lead on the reporting that Mohamed Salah is set to stay at Anfield for another year at least.

And delving further into that topic for The Athletic FC podcast, he shared more about what he’s been told by those within the club.

“I’ve already heard from multiple contacts they’re [Liverpool] looking for a wide player,” Ornstein reports.

“Now, I don’t know if that’s to add to what they’ve already got. Is it because there’s been speculation around the future of Luis Diaz who is yet to sign a new contract which is quite unusual for a player who’s done so well. He’s been linked with moves elsewhere, let’s wait and see on that.

“But it is a bit of a bulging in-tray for the new hierarchy.”

Who could Liverpool target

So, it looks like Liverpool will be after at least two players this summer. In our opinion, they could do with an elite holding midfielder too, but that’s for another day.

In terms of a forward option, you would say that Slot will have plenty at his disposal. But looking across those options, there are few out-and-out wide men.

Salah is one, although maybe he’ll be set for a new role next season. Diaz is the other, and as Ornstein mentions, he’s been linked with a move away.

With that in mind it would make sense for Liverpool to look for a winger. And there are options out there. Our pick would be Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Napoli man’s price-tag may be an issue, though.

If Liverpool wanted to look for more value, maybe Johan Bakayoko at PSV could be attractive. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush could be another interesting choice. Let’s see what the Red decide.
