'I did worry': Kelvin Wilson thought Nuno had made big team selection mistake vs Man City

Kelvin Wilson has admitted he was worried there was a glaring omission when Nuno Espirito Santo named his Nottingham Forest team on Sunday.

The Reds lost 2-0 to Manchester City at the City Ground but in large it was a very positive performance by the team.

Forest fell to goals from Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland but did have some chances of their own during the game.

Espirito Santo now has three games to get Forest over the line and they begin with a trip to Sheffield United this weekend.

The Reds sit just a point above the dotted line at the moment, with Luton to play before Forest on Friday night.

Now, Wilson has confessed that he was unsure about the team that Espirito Santo picked at the weekend – stating that he was surprised one player was missing out.

Kelvin Wilson feared for Nottingham Forest when midfielder was omitted

Well, Wilson is a former defender who still keeps a close eye on the fortunes of Forest to this day following his time with the club.

One omission from the team was Ryan Yates – and Wilson has admitted he feared the worst when he wasn’t included in the starting eleven.

He told theForest Focus podcast: “I did worry a little bit, I know Yates gets a bit of stick but he does a job in there breaking it down and I thought he might have played to give the opposition something to think about but Nuno didn’t go with him and it paid off. It was the right team.”

Yates has a role to play – but not as a starter

This might not be what some fans want to hear but if Forest are going to progress as a football club, Yates is unlikely to be considered a starter in the team.

At 26-years-old, there is a role for Yates to play whilst the club are in the Premier League and he’s definitely worthy of the squad.

There are certain games when Yates is useful – and perhaps Wilson has a point in being surprised that Forest didn’t start the midfielder at the weekend.

However, Forest showcased that they could compete with the best teams minus the man with 200 appearances to his name.

That perhaps doesn’t bode well for the remainder of the campaign for Yates and he may have to get used to being a Forest squad player instead.
