'My choice:' Jamie Carragher explains who he wanted Liverpool to appoint as manager after Jurgen Klopp

Jamie Carragher has revealed who he wanted FSG to replace Jurgen Klopp with as manager of the club.

It seems like FSG are getting closer to appointing Arne Slot as the club’s next head coach after Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the season.

Slot seems like an astute appointment. He’s got years of experience at a high level in the Netherlands, plays a similar style to Klopp and has a strong affable character.

On paper, this could be a match made in heaven for both him and the club. However, not everyone is completely sold on the idea.

Jamie Carragher has given his backing to Slot. Although he also revealed who his first choice would have been.

Jamie Carragher explains why Xabi Alonso was his first choice

For much of this managerial hunt, Liverpool fans seemed really enamoured by the prospect of Xabi Alonso succeeding Klopp.

Alonso has done wonders at Bayer Leverkusen, lifting the Bundesliga title at the club. He seems like someone who could have been a perfect appointment as well.

Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, Carragher revealed he will fully support Slot as Liverpool’s next manager. But said, he would have preferred if the Reds appointed Alonso.

“Rumours just for now. We will see till it’s confirmed, but I will back any Liverpool manager. Any manager I would back him,” Carragher said.

He was then asked whether his first choice would have been Slot.

“No, my choice would have been Xabi Alonso.”

Carragher explains why Liverpool went for Arne Slot

The former Liverpool defender also went onto explain how different the managerial market is compared to when the Reds appointed Jurgen Klopp for example. Or Rafa Benitez many years ago.

And how Slot or Ruben Amorim were the club’s probable best options.

“I don’t think right now we are in an era of sort of the managers of the past when you think of Mourinho, Conte, big names you have seen Manchester United have got over the years. Those managers are not there, or even what Chelsea have got in the past. I think we are in an era now sort of the up-and-coming managers, and Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon and Arne Slot of Feyenoord were the two names.”

Carragher added: “Most Liverpool fans who go to the match would not have really known who the man was from Feyenoord, so, yeah, it’s not like bringing in Rafa Benitez like Liverpool did when I was there or Liverpool bringing in Jurgen Klopp, who people were aware of them. But it’s just a place where we find ourselves right now.”
