‘Was absolutely fantastic’: Martin O’Neill names iconic season as his most ‘amazing’ at Celtic

Martin O’Neill has named one season at Celtic as his most memorable and best at the club.

The Irishman took over Celtic in 2000 as the Parkhead club looked to become the dominant force in Scotland as free-spending Rangers gripped Scottish football under Dick Advocaat.

The enigmatic Irishman was a huge success at Celtic as he picked up three league titles, three Scottish Cups and a League Cup over his five-year spell in Paradise.

O’Neill delivered many special moments as the manager of Celtic in both Europe and on the domestic scene but which moment ranks as the best in his Parkhead career?

O’Neill namechecks Jock Stein Celtic achievement

Fans of a certain vintage will remember watching Celtic lift the European Cup in 1967. It remains the biggest achievement ever at the club and will never be surpassed.

In that season, Celtic also lifted every domestic honour available as Stein’s Lisbon Lions dominated football.

And whilst O’Neill never quite matched the legendary Jock Stein’s achievement in Europe, he nails the moment in his Celtic career that put his name in the same breath as the Hoops legend.

O’Neill said [talkSPORT], “To win the treble in my first season was there was absolutely fantastic. It was the first time it was done since the immortal Jock Stein.

“That was really terrific, but to get beaten in the UEFA Cup Final against Porto was obviously a big disappointment.

“But if you’re asking me, I think that the first season to end up in the way it did was amazing.”

We listed five league title wins that have a significant place in Celtic’s history this century and Martin O’Neill’s 2000/01 league title win was first on the list.

The team that O’Neill built placed the building blocks of success that the Celtic fans currently enjoy to this day.

Rebuilding Celtic’s reputation in Europe will always be remembered as O’Neill took some huge scalps in the Champions League and led Celtic to the UEFA Cup Final in 2003.

O’Neill will go down in history as a legend of Celtic and will always be remembered fondly by the fans as a true Celtic great.
