Mike Tyson told he 'needs to look at himself' with boxing chiefs also condemned over Jake Paul fight

Mike Tyson has been told he needs to take a look at himself after agreeing to a professional fight with Jake Paul in July.

Boxing trainer Joe Gallagher has given a damning verdict on the bout, claiming there is no way it should have been any more than an exhibition.

It was announced in March that former heavyweight champion Tyson and ex-YouTube star Paul will enter the ring in Texas on July 20.

Tyson will be 58 at the time of the fight, over 30 years older than his opponent, to raise concerns over his safety.

Rules for the bout were only confirmed on Monday when it was announced that it had been granted professional status.

The encounter will go down on both fighter's career records, with Tyson fighting professionally for the first time since 2005.

There will be eight two-minute rounds, with 14oz gloves used instead of the usual 10oz, while headguards will not be worn.

Gallagher, who won Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year in 2015, would have accepted the fight being an exhibition.

But he cannot understand the decision to make it a professional bout following Monday's announcement, especially on Tyson's part.

Gallagher told Betway: "I don’t know how anyone could sanction that as a proper professional boxing contest.

"I love Mike Tyson and he was a phenomenal in his prime but to be giving somebody a license at that age at 58 is concerning.

"It’s concerning where boxing is going at the moment. Jake Paul is a boxer/YouTube star sensation and I just think the Texas Commission need looking at themselves for allowing it to happen.

"We could all accept an exhibition, it’s been going on for years with Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather has gone around the world doing exhibitions and everyone is having exhibitions.

"But to have as a professional contest and for Mike Tyson’s career to have it on his record if he loses to Jake Paul at the age of 58… well you have to look at yourself there."

Gallagher believes the fight belongs 'on a Misfits card' and says it will be a 'hard watch'.

He added: "When Ricky Hatton had a fight with Marco Antonio Barrera, he had an exhibition, and everyone understood what it was about.

"When it comes to Jake Paul v Mike Tyson, they’ve commissioned it as a fight but with different conditions on it like eight, two-minute rounds and 14oz gloves.

"You’re commissioning it as a fight with different rules and these are new rules because they’re not in 10oz gloves so it’s a bit of mix and match.

"It should be on a Misfits card because it doesn’t fit into the boxing world.

"Of course, Jake Paul could win, he’s a young man and has been active but with Mike Tyson, one thing you never lose is your punch (power).

"It’s over two-minute rounds but it’s going to be a hard watch."

Gallagher says the fight wouldn't have been given its new status if it was under British boxing control.

He said: "I’m sure that type of fight wouldn’t be sanctioned by the British Board of Control but over in Texas where the fight is, it is and the venue, the crowd and where it’s going on TV, I’m sure there’ll be fees paid to the commission paid from the bout so like in life, money talks."
