'What a great year': Cody Gakpo says player Man City let go in 2018 had one absolutely amazing PL season

Cody Gakpo has claimed that a certain Manchester City player had one season in particular that was simply incredible.

Several former City players have enjoyed exceptional individual campaigns that will continue to stand the test of time.

For instance, David Silva, who perhaps has too many to pick from.

Perhaps the debate will be between the 2011/2012 season and the 2017/2018 campaign; two seasons where the Spaniard looked at his absolute best, despite the gap between both terms.

However, some might side with the 2011/2012 season as being superior due to two reasons.

One, David Silva’s contributions were perhaps more vital than that campaign as it led to City winning their first Premier League title.

Secondly, the World Cup winner had more goal involvements in this particular campaign in the league, with 23 to his name (six goals and 17 assists) as opposed to 20 (nine goals and 11 assists) in the “Centurions” season.

Gakpo says one ex-City player had one particularly amazing season

Aside from Silva, other players who have played alongside him at the Etihad Stadium have also had legendary seasons.

Fernandinho also had a claim to be Manchester City’s standout player in the 2017/2018 campaign.

The Brazilian allowed Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva to have the security run riot further forward, as he covered every blade of grass while also being a controller at the base of midfield.

Not many defensive midfielders in Premier League history have exhibited the same level of completeness as Fernandinho did in that campaign.

In fairness, for most of his spell at City, the former club captain almost did a two-man job in midfield.

However, Gakpo was not referring to Silva or Fernandinho.

In a video with the Premier League’s official YouTube channel, Cody Gakpo guessed Yaya Toure to be the top goalscorer in the 2010/2011 season when the answer was Carlos Tevez alongside Dimitar Berbatov (20 goals).

However, the Liverpool forward confused that season for Toure’s iconic campaign during the 2013/2014 season where he scored 20 goals and registered nine assists, which he praised.

“Yaya Toure? He scored 20 goals, no? And 11 assists, no? What a great year it was.”

Yaya Toure entertained the world that season

Of course, Cody Gakpo, much like other players and fans of the sport will seemingly always hold that season from Yaya Toure in high regard.

Even Jack Grealish recalled how the Ivorian was so brilliant that it was “silly” when he faced him in an Aston Villa shirt in the same campaign.

Aside from the goals Toure scored, why his season will always be cherished because of how entertaining it was, in our view.

To see a midfielder score free-kicks for fun, run past basically full teams to put the ball in the back of the net and effortlessly bag screamers was box-office to witness.

It was not what Yaya Toure did but how he did it during that campaign.

As a result, it is difficult not to look back at Toure’s all-conquering displays in that season while smiling from ear to ear.
