'Quite special': Max Cleworth names his favourite moment of the season after stick from Wrexham teammates

Max Cleworth has pinpointed one season-defining moment as his favourite in a Wrexham shirt after receiving stick from his teammates.

Wrexham have had many success stories this term that have helped them win promotion.

From Arthur Okonkwo‘s heroics in between the sticks to Andy Cannon‘s magnificent midfield performances and Paul Mullin’s goals; everywhere you look there are match-winners and game-savers.

Young defensive talent Max Cleworth falls into the latter category having established himself as a key figure in Phil Parkinson‘s back three.

The 21-year-old has shown rapid progression since emerging into the first-team picture, playing in 23 of their last 25 League Two matches, despite starting just once in their opening 21.

Cleworth was given his first 90 minutes of the campaign in a 2-0 win over Newport County in December, and the youngster has never looked back.

Having emerged as one of the finest ball-playing defenders in League Two, Andy Morrell believes he has a big future ahead of him while former manager Bryan Hughes labelled him a “super player”.

Cleworth’s form was rewarded on Monday night as he claimed the Young Player of the Season award and has now opened up about his campaign in an interview.

Max Cleworth names one Wrexham moment as ‘special’

After receiving the reward, Cleworth was asked what his favourite moment of the season was.

Unsurprisingly, it was the occasion he scored his first senior goal, netting a winner against Colchester United to complete a comeback in front of their supporters.

Cleworth labelled the moment “special” as the goal inched Wrexham closer to promotion.

Speaking to Wrexham’s YouTube channel, the 21-year-old said: “I’d probably say Colchester is up there, obviously to have saved a goal for that moment was quite special.

“I’ve been getting enough stick from some of the lads for the last couple of years and it’s something I needed to add to my game, – or still need to add to my game – is getting goals. So, to have that moment in front of the away fans to win that game at that stage of the season probably stands out.”

How Max Cleworth can take his game to the next level

It is a testament to Cleworth’s talent that he received stick from his teammates for not scoring goals.

The youngster is technically gifted with the ball at his feet and since putting extra work in the gym, he’s physically more commanding in the box.

If you put those two attributes together, you have someone capable of becoming a threat in the final third, which is how he can take his game to the next level.

Cleworth was in the right place at the right time to dispatch his chance against Colchester, and that would have given him an added appetite to score goals.

Although he could find it difficult to step up to the mark in League One, he has the potential to add goal-scoring to his game.
