Ange Postecoglou expected to start out of form Tottenham player vs Chelsea on Thursday

Tottenham Hotspur will be bidding to keep their slim hopes of a top-four finish alive with a win at Chelsea tomorrow night.

Spurs fell to a 3-2 defeat at home to Arsenal on Sunday after heading into the break three goals down.

It leaves Tottenham seven points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa, having played two games less than their top-four rivals.

A victory at Stamford Bridge for Ange Postecoglou’s men feels like a must if they are to secure an unlikely Champions League spot.

But their record at Chelsea in recent years will offer little encouragement, having picked up just one league win there over the past 33 years.

Postecoglou will also face some key decisions when it comes to his team selection, with the Aussie boss confirming today that both Ben Davies and Timo Werner will miss the remainder of the season through injury.

Tottenham star expected to start vs Chelsea

As well as being short of options at left-back due to injuries to Destiny Udogie and Davies, Postecoglou will have decisions to make in the middle of the park.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg started alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison in the North London Derby.

Tottenham’s midfielders have been struggling for form of late, with Maddison’s drop-off particularly noticeable.

Postecoglou could turn to Giovani Lo Celso if he decided to rest Maddison, while Dejan Kulusevski is also an option for the advanced midfield role.

But according to The Athletic, the Spurs boss is expected to stick by Maddison for Thursday’s trip to Chelsea.

Maddison’s stats since injury

Maddison made a stunning start to his Spurs career by having a hand in eight goals in his first 10 Premier League games for the club.

An ankle injury picked up in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea back in November has derailed the Englishman’s positive start to life at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Since returning to first-team action back in January, Maddison has managed just three goal contributions in 12 league appearances.

His form has been a real cause for concern in recent weeks and the likes of Lo Celso will be keen to get an opportunity should Maddison continue to underperform.
