19-year-old midfielder could be the perfect and most obvious Arne Slot signing for Liverpool - opinion

Arne Slot may have a very obvious first signing for Liverpool in a 19-year-old midfielder.

There are so many variables to sort out for Arne Slot, who looks like to be Liverpool’s next manager and the man to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

He hasn’t even arrived at Anfield yet, but already he has a major job on his hands. Replacing Klopp will not be an easy task.

On top of that, he also needs to continue to build the Liverpool squad. He needs to bring in fresh blood and players who can help the team evolve.

While also fixing problem areas and holes in the squad. Including a major gaping hole in the holding midfield department.

Why Adam Wharton makes sense as Arne Slot’s first Liverpool signing

When it comes to young holding midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, few are as impressive as Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

He simply ticks every box under the sun. Wharton is accomplished technically. He reads the game really well. At the same time, he is also strong physically and is a tough tackler who makes it difficult for players to go past him.

The 19-year-old is exactly what you want from a holding midfielder. He’s shown it against Liverpool at Anfield recently as well, giving the Reds’ midfield a hard time. He’s also been linked with a move to Liverpool this season.

In Slot’s system, Liverpool will need another holding midfielder if the Dutchman will play with a double pivot. In that system, Wharton makes the most sense, and he is a very obvious player who the club should target.

Who else could Liverpool target?

Other than Wharton, there aren’t many obvious candidates for the holding midfield role. Mats Wiefer, who Slot worked with at Feyenoord, could be one. However, there are question marks whether he has the speed to make it in the Premier League.

It’s entirely possible, Slot could promote from within. Stefan Bajcetic is an outstanding prospect and he could have a big future ahead of him.

Tyler Morton is also highly rated and he too could be ready to come into Liverpool’s first team after an excellent season on loan at Hull City.
